William Shakespeare s Henry Iv - 1328 Words

Throughout the play Henry IV part 1, Shakespeare was able to depict the concept of honor through many different individuals. Three main characters that Shakespeare choose to display the concept of honor are Prince Hal, Hotspur and Falstaff. However, each of these characters interpret the word â€Å"honor† differently. Hotspur has an obsession with honor and believes it’s one of the most important roles a leader has to show. He relates honor to the duties that he serves on the battlefield and repetition. While Falstaff believes that honor is a word that only stays with people who have died, therefore he finds no importance in seeking honor. Prince Hal was able to find a balance between the two which allowed him to show key features in a leader†¦show more content†¦However, he has defeated Archibald and taken prisoners which included few with high political status.Including Mordake, Earl of Fife, and the leader of Archibald’s eldest son. King Henry then b egins to express how impressed he is of Hotspurs achievements. â€Å"In envy that my Lord Northumberland should be the father to so blest son: A son who is the theme of honor’s tongue.† Within this statement the King is implying that Hotspurs father (Northumberland) is blessed to have such a successful and fearless son, and that he is a perfect example of a man with honor. This truly shapes the concept of honor that Hotspur takes on through the rest of the play. Since he has now been so honored by the King for his bloodthirsty acts on the battlefield Hotspur nearly became brainwashed and allowed his words to shape his every thought. He then made a plan to ransom Mortimer. In which the King soon refused to do. Hotspur viewed this as a dishonorable action of the King so he then seeked out to overthrow the King with Northumberland and Worcester to regain the honor that was lost through the Kings mistreatment to him. This shows that Hotspur believes he will gain honor by fighting in battles, and even if he dies he still would die with great honor. Hotspur goes on to say â€Å"To pluck bright honor from the pale-faced moon, or dive into the bottom of the deep.† This projects how far Hotspur is

Bullying Schools Its Causes And Effects On Students

Bullying is a worldwide issue that affects millions of individuals every day. To some it could be meant as a joke but the reality of the matter is that it could cost someone their life. One article written about the causes and effects of bullying in elementary schools’ explains, â€Å"bullying may include verbal and physical assaults, threats, ‘jokes’ or language, mockery and criticizing, insulting behavior and facial expressions†(Jan,2015). Bullying is not just narrowed down to one specific remark; it can range from a variety of different behaviors and remarks. The article â€Å"Bullying in Elementary Schools: Its Causes and Effects on Students† (2015), studies how students perceive bullying in school, and what does bullying stem from, in other words why do does bullying exist. This study was performed on 234 male and female eighth grade students in Mianwali, Pakistan (2015). These students were randomly selected from both public and private school districts. This study found that the first leading cause of bullying was â€Å"power fullness† as described in the article; individuals would bully others to feel a sense of power and to feel superior to them. The second cause of bullying was found to be revenge; students cause harm to other students to seek revenge. The revenge may not be taken out on the same individual that initially teased them but is most likely transferred to another student increasing the number of students affected by bullying. An examination of the Nichomacean Ethics is a task that contains the dichotomy of examining Aristotle’s simple, basic definitions along with the great complexity that is present in the underlying meaning behind the simplicity. Aristotle believed the ultimate goal of a human being was (is) to seek happiness and that only a virtuous person can truly achieve happiness.   The acceptance of these notions centers on the perception of the definitions of â€Å"virtue† and â€Å"happiness†. Eudemonia is a particularly complex situation when trying to understand the importance of it in regards to ethics because eudemonia generally refers to â€Å"happiness or pleasure.† Unfortunately, as the history of human behavior has shown, there will be those individuals who derive their happiness from actions that can be somewhat harmful to people. This type of behavior is, essentially, a pleasure principle based on perversion as opposed to one that is based on ethical behavior. So, it becomes important to separate Eudemonia from perversion or anti-social behavior in because, ultimately, while there may be some pleasure present in such conduct, this does not lead to overall happiness because there might exist a situation where such behavior leads a person down a road of a damaged life. Drugs may bring happiness, but this will exist only for the short term. Ultimately, they will lead to a damaged life that is devoid of happiness. As such, the happiness that Eudemonia  represents must not be transitional happiness, but happiness that is everlasting. In order to achieve this, the happiness must be based on ethical approaches to the pursuit of happiness. Ultimately, virtue breeds ethics and a disposition that is virtuous will further perpetuate ethical behavior. The reason for this is simple: a person who acts with purity can not act unethically as a lack of ethics and a preponderance of virtue are, essentially, mutually exclusive. A disposition of virtue will, in effect, cancel out any unethical or immoral behavior. Now, a virtuous person can also be a person who is rife with internal conflict. To seek happiness does not mean that the person will achieve happiness no matter how hard he or she tries. Often, there will be conflicted internal struggles that pit virtue, honesty and â€Å"the good life† against the frailties of the human psyche and soul. This internal conflict often will eat away at the ability to achieve happiness. However, if a person lives a life that is ethical, a great deal of conflict and stress will be removed from a person’s life. This, in turn, will allow the person a semblance of happiness or, at the very least, a lessoning of conflicting tensions that prey on the mind. Prescribing to a balance of ethics and happiness hinge on the need for virtuous actions and, while this is not possible all the time, it is possible a great deal of the time and can be achieved if an individual concentrates on it enough.
